The first ever photo taken of the Chernobyl disaster, 14 hours after the explosion. It was taken by photographer Igor Kostin in the first helicopter to fly over the disaster zone to evaluate radiation levels. The view is foggy due to the high radiation.

Sunset in a dayroom on the fire-damaged ward at Buffalo State Hospital.  In the late 60s or early 70s, a patient set fire to the doorframe on her room; the ward was evacuated and the sprinklers kicked on, extinguishing the fire, but making the soot run down the walls of the ward, causing black streaks.  Instead of cleaning up the mess, the ward was simply abandoned.
